COMBO STRAPPER – Film Application and Strapping in One Machine
COMBO STRAPPER is a fully automatic combined packaging machine that integrates two technological processes within a single workstation. The machine first automatically applies protective or promotional top-cover film to the top of the pallet and then stabilises the load using horizontally applied PP or PET strapping.
Combining both technologies in a single machine reduces the space requirements of the production line and eliminates the need for a separate film application workstation. Strapping also keeps the applied film securely in position and prevents it from shifting, for example due to air movement within an industrial facility.
Two Automatic Processes in One Workstation
COMBO STRAPPER performs film application and subsequent strapping as one automated process. Once the pallet has been detected, the system unwinds the preset length of film, moves it above the product and places it in the required position.
After the film has been automatically separated, the strapping frame moves to the programmed working heights and applies the required number of horizontal straps. The pallet therefore leaves the workstation covered and securely stabilised for further handling, storage or dispatch.
Protective or Promotional Top-Cover Film
The system can use top-cover film with a width of up to 1,600 mm and a maximum unwinding length of 1,600 mm. The recommended film thickness is 50 – 80 μm.
The top-cover film can be used not only as a protective element but also as a carrier for promotional graphics, logos or other identification elements.
Precise Positioning of Printed Film
When promotional or printed film is used, the system can utilise a black mark sensor. The sensor detects the registration mark on the film and ensures precise positioning on the required area of the pallet.
This makes it possible to maintain the correct orientation of graphics or logos even during a fully automatic packaging process.
Automatic Film Cutting
Once the preset length of film has been unwound and positioned, it is separated by a FESTO pneumatic linear cutting system. The entire process is carried out automatically without the need for manual operator intervention.
Horizontal Pallet Strapping
After the film has been applied, the operating cycle continues with automatic horizontal strapping. The strapping frame moves to the programmed working heights and applies the required number of straps according to the selected programme.
The machine operates with PP or PET strapping in widths of 12, 16 or 19 mm. The tensioning force can be adjusted within a range of 100 – 4,500 N, allowing the process to be adapted to the characteristics and weight of the specific product.
GS41 Strapping Head
Automatic strapping is performed by the GS41 strapping head. Once the strap has been fed around the load, the system tensions it, creates a strong friction-welded joint and automatically cuts the strap.
The strap feeding speed reaches 4 m/s, while the strapping cycle itself takes approximately 9 seconds.
Automatic Operating Cycle
The entire process, from pallet arrival to completion of the packaging cycle, can be carried out without manual operator intervention:
- Pallet detection – sensors or the higher-level PLC confirm the correct position of the load.
- Film unwinding – the system automatically unwinds the preset length of protective or promotional film.
- Precise positioning – the support moves above the pallet and places the film in the required position.
- Automatic cutting – the FESTO pneumatic linear cutting system separates the film.
- Horizontal strapping – the strapping frame moves to the programmed working heights.
- Friction welding – the strapping head tensions, joins and automatically cuts the strap.
SIEMENS S7-1200 Control System
The automatic operating process is controlled by an industrial SIEMENS S7-1200 control system. The controls allow the operator to set the film length, working positions, number of applied straps and tensioning force, as well as manually control individual machine functions.
COMBO STRAPPER can be connected to a higher-level PLC or production line control system and integrated into a comprehensive automated production and packaging process.
PP or PET Strapping
Depending on the characteristics of the load, PP or PET strapping in widths of 12, 16 or 19 mm can be used.
- PP strapping – a flexible and economical solution for light- and medium-duty applications.
- PET strapping – suitable for heavy palletised products and applications requiring higher strapping strength.
