Automatic Strapping and Stretch Wrapping in One Workstation

COMBO SIDEHEAD STRAPPER is a fully automatic combined packaging machine that integrates strapping with PP or PET strap and subsequent stretch wrapping of palletised loads. Both processes are carried out within one compact packaging workstation.

The machine is designed for industrial operations requiring high performance, consistent packaging quality and minimal manual intervention. It can operate as a standalone packaging workstation or be integrated directly into an automated production, packaging or logistics line.

Two Packaging Processes in One Machine

COMBO SIDEHEAD STRAPPER secures the pallet in two ways. Strapping provides strong mechanical load stabilisation, while subsequent stretch wrapping provides additional stability and protection.

Combining both technologies within a single workstation reduces the space required for the packaging process and enables a unified automated packaging sequence.

Automatic Strapping with PP or PET Strap

The strapping section operates with PP or PET strap in widths of 12, 16 or 19 mm. The tensioning force can be adjusted within a range of 50 – 3,500 N according to the type, weight and required stability of the packaged product.

Once the strap has been guided around the pallet, the system tensions it and creates a strong friction weld. The strapping cycle takes approximately 7 seconds.

Side-Mounted Strapping Head

A distinctive feature of the COMBO SIDEHEAD STRAPPER is its side-mounted strapping head. Its position provides easy access for operation and servicing while also allowing flexible integration of the machine into the packaging workstation.

The movement of the strapping head is provided by a belt drive as part of the automatic operating process.

Automatic Pallet Stretch Wrapping

After strapping, the machine can continue with stretch wrapping of the palletised load according to the selected programme. The pallet is positioned on a turntable, which rotates during the wrapping cycle while the film carriage applies the stretch film according to the selected programme.

The result is a pallet that is mechanically stabilised by strapping while also being protected and reinforced with stretch film.

Motorised Film Pre-Stretch up to 300%

Depending on the selected configuration, the machine can be equipped with a motorised stretch film pre-stretch system. The pre-stretch range is 100 – 300%.

Pre-stretching enables more efficient use of packaging material while maintaining the required stability of the palletised load.

ZEPHYR Automatic Film Applicator

The optional ZEPHYR system automatically catches and applies the stretch film to the pallet without requiring the operator to attach the film manually.

This configuration further increases the level of automation of the entire packaging workstation.

Complete Automatic Packaging Cycle

Once the pallet has been positioned on the turntable, COMBO SIDEHEAD STRAPPER can perform the entire programmed packaging process:

• Pallet positioning and detection – sensors confirm the correct position of the load on the turntable.
• Automatic strapping – the strap is guided around the pallet, tensioned and joined by friction welding.
• Stretch wrapping – the turntable rotates while the film carriage performs the preset wrapping programme.
• Cycle completion – once the programme has been completed, the pallet is stabilised and ready for further handling or dispatch.

6 to 99 Packaging Programmes

Depending on the configuration, 6 to 99 packaging cycles can be stored in the control system memory. Separate packaging programmes can therefore be prepared for different products or pallet types.

The machine can subsequently operate using a repeatable preset sequence according to the specific product and the required method of pallet securing.

SIEMENS S7-1200 Control System

The machine's automatic processes are controlled by an industrial SIEMENS S7-1200 system. The equipment enables manual sequence control and, depending on the configuration, communication with a higher-level PLC, production system, ERP or MES.

COMBO SIDEHEAD STRAPPER can therefore be integrated into a comprehensive automated production and logistics process.

Turntable Options According to Pallet Handling Requirements

The machine can be configured with different types of turntables depending on the method of pallet loading, required load capacity and available workstation space.

• Standard turntable – diameter 1,500 – 2,200 mm, maximum load capacity 2,000 kg and optional access ramp.
• TRANSPALLET – diameter 1,650 – 1,800 mm, load capacity up to 1,200 kg and a cut-out for pallet truck access.
• SLIM – diameter 1,650 mm, load capacity up to 1,250 kg and a construction height of only 25 mm.

Multiple Stretch Film Tensioning Options

Depending on the required level of automation and packaging material consumption, different film tensioning systems can be selected:

• MB – mechanical brake – simple mechanical control of stretch film tension.
• EB – electromagnetic brake – electronically controlled film tension during the wrapping cycle.
• MPS – motorised stretch film pre-stretch.
• MPS2 – adjustable pre-stretch level for optimising film consumption and load stability.

Stabilising Unit for Unstable Pallets

For tall, lightweight or less stable palletised loads, the workstation can be equipped with a stabilising unit. The pressure arm stabilises the load while the pallet rotates and throughout the wrapping process.
